You Could Have A Great Business Buying Wholesale Bagels And Reselling Them

By Timothy Brown

People love to think owning a business means making their own hours and getting rich the easy way. The truth is that small business owners do more working than relaxing. Some become very successful, but it is seldom quick or easy. If you think you have what it takes to make as an entrepreneur, and are considering opening a retail specialty shop, you could buy wholesale bagels and resell them to the public.

There are advantages to purchasing baked goods instead of making them yourself. If you don't know anything about making bagels for instance, you will have to take the time to learn how to create really unique and special ones. You will need expensive equipment and some employees. You could spent that time instead working in a shop with someone willing to teach you the retail business.

Ideas are great, but you need to have some capital to start your business. Family and friends are often the best possibilities. You could approach them with the idea of making them silent partners in the venture if they aren't interested in becoming active partners. Failing that, you may have to take your business plan to a lender, make a compelling presentation, and hope you can get a loan.

If money is tight, you might consider opening a take out shop instead of an eat in restaurant. That way you can save a lot of money on decor and furniture. You won't need as many employees either. The rent will be more expensive, but it might be worth if you set up shop in a mall, near a school, or in some other high traffic area. You'll get noticed and have more potential customers.

You have to consider offering more than just bagels in your shop. Customers will buy coffee, tea, and juice to wash their breakfasts down, and you will make more money. A vintage cooler or refrigerator filled with jellies, jams, cream cheese, and other sweets will probably be a hit with customers as well.

It would be nice if you could just open your doors and stand back and let the customers stream in, but things don't usually happen that way. You might hate to spend the money, but you will need an aggressive marketing campaign to get out the word that you are in business. A fantastic website is essential. Offering discounts, coupons, door prizes, and anything else that gets people in the door are investments you will have to make.

Hungry people are attracted to the smell of fresh baked goods, so you need to keep your warming oven working all the time. This way you will always have fresh food for your customers, and the odor coming from your open door will be irresistible to passers by. Light background music and a daily specials board outside your door are also inviting.

Starting a business isn't easy. Staying in business and making a success of it is even harder. To have a chance, you have to be prepared to work harder, longer, and smarter than your competition.
