People Who Love Spicy Food Say The Best Dessert Is A Jamaican Fruit Cake

The tastes of the Caribbean are like no other, as recipes range from fruity to spicy or tangy. Some menu items call for an array of flavors on one plate that makes the taste buds dance with delight. While most people have their favorite island inspired entrees, side dishes, and even drinks, dessert is often overlooked. The Jamaican fruit cake is many layers of flavor that can be served every day of the year.

While some people who can handle scotch bonnet peppers, which has one of the highest Scoville units, may not think about sweets after dinner, may be in for a nice surprise. Many tend to think that they may not be able to taste the sweets after a meal. Although there are many online recipes for this dessert, which is also known as black cake, the most authentic cakes contain an array of fresh ground spices, fruit, and plenty of rum or brandy.

Flan is ideal for those who like caramel or custard. Most recipes serve more than a few people at a time but can be modified into single servings. If the company refrigerator is already packed to capacity, this might not be the ideal dish to bring. Unless kept in a hard storage container, any damage to the custard will kill the presentation.

If using alcohol is a no, the spices should be the main focus. Ground spices are okay to use as long as a noticeable scent is present while still in the container. Although some recipes will result in a medium brown to a coffee bean colored concoction, it helps to know that adding molasses to the batter will give it a richer color.

There are some recipes that will call for molasses to add flavor and add color. However, many use alcohol, usually brandy or rum, for added moisture and taste. The liquids can make the difference when it comes to taste and potency. This should also be figured out before determining who will be eating this dessert.

This is not an ordinary fruit cake that may be regifted during the holidays. Most people love this because of its alcohol content. Most recipes do not specify what type of rum but anyone who wants to loosen things up, it cannot hurt to try a dark version that is 151 proof.

This is best enjoyed with a warm cup of coffee or a small scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side. The great thing about this dessert is that the flavors will not get lost after a spicy meal. Anyone on a diet will be glad to know that this cake can be frozen and consumed at a later date. Just wrap tightly with plastic wrap and place inside a food storage or freezer bag and keep in coldest part of refrigerator no more than six months.

Whatever a person decides to bring, they should ensure that the dish is made with love. Anyone buying from a supermarket, no matter how nice should check expiration dates for freshness. Items made at home should be in a dish that transports well so it will remain intact once serving time has arrived. What a lot of people do not understand is that good food is a form of communication. Anyone willing to share their culinary skills with coworkers should also be prepared to share recipes.
