Muslims Must Consume Only Halal Certified Food

By Sarah Gibson

Islam is a comprehensive religion that provide guidelines to Muslims on just about every facet of their lives. Food is a very important part of the daily lives of all Muslims. It is believe that the food that one eats not only affects the physical condition of the person concerned, but also the spiritual and moral character. That is why Muslims follow so many rules regarding what they eat, when they eat and how the meal is prepared. The basic rule is that only Halal certified food may be consumed.

The process whereby halaal certification is obtained is lengthy and complex. The applicant must provide proof that he follows every prescribed rule meticulously. Every country with a substantial Muslim community has some form of halaal council that evaluate halaal certification. Such certification can easily be withdrawn if the applicant breeches the rules. In addition, certification is automatically reviewed every year but not automatically renewed.

Certain types of foodstuffs automatically never qualify for certification. Anything that contains any for of alcohol is banned by Islamic Law. Any derivative or extract used in the manufacturing or preparation of any foodstuff that was sourced from any place except a halaal abattoir is also banned outright. This is because the monitoring of halaal animal derivative and extracts in an abattoir is time consuming and difficult. All forms of pork are banned.

Halaal certification do not just focus on the ingredients of the foodstuffs. There are numerous other rules that must be followed during the manufacturing, packaging or preparation processes. For example, foodstuffs may not be prepared in containers such as pots or pans that have been used in the preparation of non halaal meals. It is even necessary to use separate washing and drying facilities.

It is not only Muslim owned restaurants, retailers and manufacturers that are eligible for halaal certification. Any company or person that can comply with each and every rule of the Islamic Law may apply. However, the presence of at least two Muslims during manufacturing and cooking processes is strongly recommended. Their job is to make sure that every rule is strictly observed at all times.

Halaal certified products and meals are not just popular with Muslims. Many other people prefer these products and meals. Halaal meals are known for being prepared under very strictly monitored conditions and the highest standards of hygiene are observed at all times. There is also the fact that only the highest quality ingredients are used. In addition, many people firmly believe that halaal meals are more flavourful and tasty than meals from other cultures and sources.

Halaal certification is not easy to obtain, but such certification can most certainly be worth it. Unfortunately, not everyone that claims that their products are halaal are truthful. Consumers must therefore make sure that such products are indeed properly certified before they buy or eat it. Most halaal products display the halaal certification logo prominently.

Muslims strive towards complete obedience to all the rules in the Islamic Law. For most Muslims, this does not constitute a sacrifice. They want to be good Muslims. That is why they do everything possible to make sure that they follow each and every rule pertaining to eating, the preparation of meals and the purchase of foodstuffs.
